Ein Blick in meinen Lieblingsbach erzeugt eine Überdosis an Schönheit für Augen, Herz und Verstand. Kristallklares Wasser rieselt über das sienarote Bachbett. Das Himmelsblau, vermischt mit dem Blattwerk der Baumkronen im Gegenlicht, spiegelt sich auf der Wasseroberfläche. Farnwedel hängen über das Wasser, vervielfacht durch ihre eigenen Spiegelungen und Schatten am Bachbett. Und all das gekrönt vom strahlendsten Grün-Gelb der Blätter des wilden Ingwers*.
Dieses Motiv ist das komplexeste, an das ich mich bisher mit Aquarell gewagt habe. Es erforderte ein großes Maß an intensiver Beobachtung, Vorplanung und Konzentration während der Ausführung. Dennoch hatte ich während des Malens wieder und wieder Aha-Momente, in denen ich Details und Zusammenhänge entdeckte, die das Weiterarbeiten erst ermöglichten. Und das hoffe ich auch für Betrachter dieses Bildes: Lasst den Blick schweifen, verliert euch im Dickicht und taucht wieder auf mit neuer Freude an euren Entdeckungen.

*Wilder Ingwer ist eine invasive Pflanze, die an vielen Stellen die natürliche Vegetation Neuseelands verdrängt. Als Ökologin wünsche ich mir diese Pflanze weg, als Künstlerin schätze ich ihre Schönheit. Mein ureigenster innerer Konflikt …

Looking into my favourite stream creates an overdose of beauty for my eyes, heart and brain. Crystal clear water trickles over a Sienna coloured river bed. The blue of the sky, intermingled with the backlighted foliage of the tree canopy, is reflected on the surface of the water. Fern fronds are hanging over the water, multiplied by their own reflections and shadows on the stream bed. All this topped by the brightest yellow-green of the leaves of wild ginger*.
This subject is by far the most complex I have ever dared to tackle in watercolour. It required a large amount of intense observation, preliminary planning and focus during execution. Despite that I experienced a number of aha moments, discovering ever more detail and new context, which then allowed me to continue painting. And this is what I hope will happen to viewers of this painting: Let your eyes wander, get lost in the thicket and resurface full of joy over your discoveries.

*Wild ginger is an invasive plant outcompeting in many areas New Zealand’s natural vegetation. As an ecologist I want it removed, as an artist I appreciate its beauty. My very own inner conflict …

Pareidolie ist der Fachbegriff für die fast magisch anmutende Leistung des menschlichen Gehirns, vertraute Bilder in ganz unterschiedlichen Mustern erkennen zu können. Wir alle kennen das, wenn aus Felsen, Gebüsch oder knorrigen Baumstämmen Gesichter werden. Mit etwas Übung lässt sich diese spezielle Fähigkeit fast beliebig erweitern. Im Rahmen meiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit beschäftige ich mich schon immer mit dem Vergnügen, meine Fantasie auf Zufallsgrundlagen loszulassen.
Dieses Korallenriff ist pure Pareidolie.

Pareidolia is the technical term for a seemingly magical capacity of the human brain allowing us to see familiar images in a range of different patterns. We are all familiar with the effect when seeing faces in rocks, shrubbery or gnarled tree trunks. With a little practice this special skill can be pushed very far. In the context of my art I have always been devoted to letting my imagination loose to play with chance substrates.
This coral reef is pure pareidolia.
